Doctor Who Adipose Marshmallows

Doctor Who has been one of my absolute favorite shows for a while. I actually have several DW dishes planned at this time but as this week and next week are rather busy weeks for me, we’ll have to start with something quick and easy – Adipose Marshmallows. Adipose are little alien creatures literally created from human fat with the help of a dodgy diet pill. Maybe that’s why I do so poorly with diets? Ha.

These little guys were very fun to put together and I couldn’t help but to give each of them a little bit of personality in their gestures and expressions. Feel free to play around with the arrangement of the mini marshmallow ‘limbs’ to suit your fancy. Food’s food, but food is fun! Gamers, grab your mats:

• 1 bag regular-sized marshmallows, white
• 1 bag mini marshmallows, white
• black decorating icing

That’s it. No, really.

Legitimately, you don’t need a giant bag of mini marshmallows; it’s just what I had on hand.

For each Adipose you will need one regular marshmallow and three mini marshmallows. Start by cutting one of your mini marshmallows in half horizontally for the little feet.

Once the marshmallow is snipped, squeeze it lightly to return it to its circular state. This will help the mini marshmallow stick to the larger marshmallow body better.

I found that I could stick the little feet to the Adipose body pretty easily and they stuck rather well but if you need a little extra sticking power you can use a dot of white melted Candy Melts or decorating icing on the sticky side.

Yes, I was feeling confident enough to use the black icing for the joints. If you are at all unsure, use white. Any smeared black icing will stain.

Stick the little feet to the body. For a sitting posture you can stick these to the front; if you want them to look like they’re standing up you can stick them to the bottom of the marshmallow towards the ‘front’ of the body.

Next, you will need one mini marshmallow for each arm. For my primary limb placement I cut at a shallow diagonal to allow the arms to come out from the body. You can also snip a small bit off the marshmallows horizontally to have the arms stick straight out from the body.

Something like this will do nicely.

Add a dot of Candy Melts or icing to the ‘shoulder joint’ and stick. You may need to hold the arms to be body for a few seconds to make sure they stay in place.

They should look similar to this.

As a whole you’ll want to do the snip, glue, and stick procedure fairly quickly to prevent the snipped marshmallows from drying out and losing their stickiness. To counteract this, I set mine up assembly line style,one batch of legs then one batch of arms:

Once your Adipose are constructed you can add their facial features with black decorating icing. I recommend buying this premade in a tube and adding a tip for more control. I used a #3 tip which makes reasonably thin lines and was pretty happy with the result:

Bollocks. It’s almost too cute to eat.

You’re done! Overall, the whole process feels a little tedious and I stepped away several times for a break (mostly to keep the dog from having a panic attack due to the storms rolling through the area) but the end result is absolutely adorable. You could even turn these into marshmallow pops by inserting a lollipop stick into the body before you add your limbs.

So much variety, it’s impossible to pick a favorite.
