November’s Featured Recipe is here at last! You voted; I experimented in the kitchen. I’m proud to say that with a little patience and perseverance we were able to create something really unique! This week’s recipe: Bombchu Lemon Bars from Legend of Zelda! Yes, those little explosive mouse-like thingies. Are they not adorable?
This recipe comes in three parts: a buttery, slightly sweet shortbread, creamy and sour lemon curd, and complementing ABC (apple, blueberry, cinnamon) fruit leather. All from scratch, all in less than 24 hours. Cut me a little slack, fruit leather takes forever to dehydrate!
Look at the tails. LOOK AT THEM. Are you ready for this? Too late, let’s go.
It’s about that time again, geeks. Time to vote! And no, I don’t mean casting a ballot for the lesser of two evils to run a country or some equally depressing thing; I’m talking about voting for November’s Featured Recipe on Skill Up Skillet! Are you feeling some Legend of Zelda? I’m feeling some Legend of Zelda.
Like last time, I’m giving you three choices: Chocolate Peanut Butter Deku Nuts, Deku Shield Brownies, or Bombchu Lemon Bars. They all sound pretty amazing, right? Voting will be held starting today through the month of October. You can vote once a week, so make it count, yeah? Tell all your friends! Try to rig the vote! I want to see as many votes cast as possible.
Actually… is there a Negative Skillet Difficulty here? -1 Skillets? I should make that a thing (I won’t).
Looking for a unique health potion alternative? Put your clicker-finger down; you’ve found it! This wonderful thing you see before you is a chilled strawberry soup you never knew you were dreaming of. What’s better, it’s my variation of the Disney World strawberry soup recipe from the Grand Floridian hotel. Short story time? Short story time:
Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away (or Florida, year 2000) Little Leisel and her parents went on a Disney Dream Vacation. Highlights of said trip include (but are not limited to):
Snorkeling
Tower of Terror
Dad sneaking off the cruise ship in the middle of the night to go on a Grand Adventure in the Bahamas. This is also called, “Bribing a local to take you around on the hunt for certain Special Cigars”.

This Soup
Fifteen years later, I still think this soup is the best soup in the world. And I don’t even particularly like soup. I ended up making two batches of this out of convenience (what the hell else do you do with 5 pounds of frozen strawberries?). This can and will outfit a respectable RPG group. Sure, health potions are featured in most every game out there, but today felt like a Legend of Zelda day. Want more Triforce in your day? I think I have just what you’re looking for.
Are you ready for this? I don’t think you are. I don’t think you can handle this. Eff it, let’s go.
Skill Up Skillet attended a midnight launch event for Majora’s Mask 3D on February 13th at the Bridgewater Falls GameStop in Fairfield, Ohio – just a short jaunt down the road from where I live. Friend and reader Keith B. attended this launch as well and was gracious enough to take photos from the event. There ended up being about 20 people in attendance, plus staff, and we had a great time. Photos after the jump.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D will be released tomorrow, February 13th, 2015. Incidentally, when I made this recipe I wasn’t even thinking about it and didn’t know the exact release date for the game. Happy accidents are happy, yes? Yes. A couple months back, Neo and I had one of our famous Eccentric Post-12 Hour Shift Sunday Talks on our way home from work when one of us came up with the idea for this one. This recipe turned out to be a little challenging but is easily perfected with some practice. In this case, the final product you see is from the third batch. It went a little something like this:
Heated sugar syrup to 250 degrees F instead of 295-300 degrees F because I accidentally misread the thermometer. Sugar syrup thickened but did not set. Whoops.
Success! Called Neo and Jessie to kitchen to gloat, took turns handling the sugar glass, Jessie mishandled it and it shattered.
Complete success!
The third, finished ‘pane’ will be getting hauled off for a midnight release event tonight at a local GameStop and I’m really looking forward to giving out samples. That said, I have a lot of cards to print out for the event so…
